| Synopsis |
Rollo the clown is a dwarf and works in a circus.
Besides the people in the circus, he has a lot of animal friends
too. Everyone is entertained by Rollo’s antics and tricks. He
makes people laugh and seems so happy outwardly. However, deep
within he is really sad because of his diminutive size. As winter
approaches, the circus moves South to a warmer clime. They camp at
the edge of a forest. One day Rollo and his animal friends go for a
walk through the forest. It is evening and in their enjoyment they
are caught unawares for it soon becomes dark. They are unable to
find their way back and decide to spend the night in the forest
glade.
Rollo lies on the ground and looks up at the starry sky. He sees a
shooting star and makes a wish. He’d like to be tall and handsome
like the gymnasts in the circus. To his amazement the star
approaches - nearer and nearer. A door opens and out comes a fairy
princess with wand and all. She tells Rollo that she can grant him
his wish if that’s what he wants. Rollo excitedly replies in the
affirmative. The fairy waves her wand and Rollo is transformed into
a tall and handsome guy. The transformation fills Rollo with
conceit. He says that he does not need his animal friends any more.
The fairy cautions him and tells him that if that is his attitude he
will soon be lonely as they won’t love him anymore. Rollo thinks
deeply and is filled with remorse. He tells the fairy that he would
rather have his friends than be tall and handsome. The fairy is
pleased and tells Rollo that all he has to do is snap his finger and
be his old self again. Rollo does just that and is amazed to see his
animal friends all staring down at him. Rollo gets up and they all
start walking back to the camp, Rollo has a secret smile on his face
as he realizes that he is not sad on the inside anymore.

| Other
Information |
The story is written in poetry form, because it is felt
that it would be more suitable for the 3 to 5 year olds to whom
the story would have to be read and the couplets would be more
entertaining for them. whereas the five to seven year olds would
like to read the prose for themselves and probably find the rhyming
couplets a bit childish.
If
found acceptable, I would like to do a series of Rollo books with
suitable themes.
